Answer
Hi-
To follow up on our Zoom conversation, here are the databases we searched that worked out best for searching for scholarly articles about a current social topic. In your case, the topic was "defund the police".
The databases:
- JSTOR
- Opposing Viewpoints in Context
- Issues & Controversies
In JSTOR, I just searched "defund the police", just like that, with the quotes around it. And be sure to choose "Content I can access". Here you will find some scholarly, peer-reviewed articles.
In Opposing Viewpoints, I searched defund the police (without quotes). and chose the "Full Text Documents" box. Be sure to look for/at the "VIEWPOINTS" section of your results. These are the opinion pieces, aka, editorials. So these are not peer-reviewed, but they are scholarly.
In the Issues & Controversies database, I did a different kind of search. Here I just searched one word: defund.
Then, in my results, look to the right side for the Narrow Results option. Choose "In the Past Year" to focus our results on just those published within the past year. Finally, I used the menu at the top of the page, and chose Editorials. All of these steps resulted in me getting a list of Editorials published in the last year with "defund" in their titles ...and they appear to be highly relevant to your research.
Hope this helps!
